Course Outline

By means of deepening their personal awareness and understanding of religion and religious issues in an increasingly plural society, the Religious Studies course aims to equip students to become effective professional teachers of Religious Education. The course includes focused studies on Christianity and other major faith traditions, on the relationships between them and on their approaches to a range of ethical issues and, in particular, on ways of exploring these themes in the post-primary classroom.

The course is open to students from all religious backgrounds and those of no religion, and qualifies graduates to teach R.E. in a variety of settings, to GCSE and GCE A Levels.

Learning & Teaching

Teaching methods include lectures, seminars and informal classes in which student participation is encouraged. Assessment is by course work and examination and third and fourth year students are given opportunities to develop research skills. Emphasis is placed on inclusion, respect for diversity, creative approaches to dealing with conflict and the development of critical openness towards a range of religious beliefs and practices and alternative life stances.

A significant element of the final year of study will involve synopic assessment in the form of a dissertation.
