Dr Sharon McMurray MBE-PhD, BSc, BEd, DASE, AMBDA, CCET, SpLD APC

Dr McMurray is Head of the SEN Literacy Unit and course leader. She has extensive experience of SEN and dyslexia from both a teaching and research perspective. Dr McMurray is a member of the British Dyslexia Association course accreditation board and an associate assessor with the Education and Training Inspectorate (ETI) in N. Ireland. She received an MBE in the June 2017 for 'Services to Children with Literacy Difficulties and to Those with Special Educational Needs'. In October 2017 Dr McMurray received 'A Lifetime Achievement Award' from the British Dyslexia Association. Her staff profile can be found at:

Louise O’Sullivan-MA (Hons)HCM - Marketing & PR Administrator

Louise works within the Marketing Department of Stranmillis and deals with all course enquires and marketing for MEd and CPD courses. She has experience in sales, marketing and event management both in Scotland and Ireland. Claire McVeigh-BSc.PGDip CCET RQTU PhD CPsychol CSci

Dr Claire McVeigh is a Chartered Psychologist based at the SEN Literacy Unit. Claire is a professional member of the British Dyslexia Association and Northern Ireland’s only British Psychological Society Verified Assessor for CCET. Claire is a course tutor for modules EDC9098 Educational Testing and Examination Access Arrangements and EDC7024 Research Methods with Psychometrics and provides support on EDC7030 Case Study Dissertation.

Rose Montgomery-BSc, MSc, PGCE-VLE Support Officer 

Rose works within the college IT department as a VLE Support Officer. She has experience in creating multimedia resources to meet the demands of an online course. Part-time Staff

Paula Bower-B.Ed, M.Ed, AMBDA, APC

Paula has extensive experience working on a one-to-one basis with children with dyslexia in her current role on the Education Authority SpLD team. She has over 20 years’ teaching experience in primary schools including a large primary school in England with 97% enrolment from an ethnic minority background. She has also been Principal/Head teacher of a primary school. Paula teaches on modules EDC7024, EDC9094 and EDC9095 and is a one-to-one tutor for students undertaking AMBDA as part fulfilment of modules EDC7024 and EDC 7030.

Dr Paul O’Callaghan-DECAP (Doctorate in Educational, Child and Adolescent Psychology)

Dr Paul O’Callaghan works as an Education and Child Psychologist and has extensive experience in the assessment of literacy difficulties. Paul provides practical, one-to-one feedback to students on test administration as part of modules EDC7024 (Research methods with psychometrics) and EDC7030 (Case study dissertation option).

Anne McKinless-BA, MSc (ICT), AMBDA, CCET, BDA DysLang, TEFL

Anne has extensive experience working on a one-to-one basis with children with dyslexia. In her current role on the SpLD team she offers advice, support, and training to teachers, parents, and classroom assistants. She has also worked in primary, secondary and further education and provided training for schools in synthetic phonics. Anne is a one-to one tutor for students undertaking ATS as part fulfilment of module EDC9095.

Valerie Haugh-MBE, B.Ed, M.Ed, DASE, AMBDA

Valerie has extensive experience working on a one-to-one basis with children with dyslexia and was Head of the Belfast Education & Library Board Peripatetic Support Service until her retirement in 2014. Valerie received the MBE for her pioneering work in this service. Valerie is a one-to-one tutor for students undertaking AMBDA as part fulfilment of module EDC 7030. 

Sue Boyd-B.Ed, AMBDA

Sue has extensive experience working on a one-to-one basis with children with dyslexia. In her current role on the SpLD team she offers advice, support, and training to teachers, parents, and classroom assistants. She has also worked in primary, secondary and further education and provided training for schools in dyslexia awareness and dyslexia friendly schools and classrooms. Sue is a one-to one tutor for students undertaking ATS as part fulfilment of module EDC9095.

Sylvia Philips-BA, DASE, M.Ed (SEN), AMBDA

Sylvia (based in Manchester) is lead author of the core text 'Assessment of Learners with Dyslexic -Type Difficulties' and co-author of ‘Teaching Literacy to Learners with Dyslexia'. She has a wealth of experience and expertise working with children on a one-to-one basis and in teacher education. Sylvia assesses video evidence of teaching for the award of AMBDA as part of EDC7030 and provides practical, one-to-one feedback to students.
