University College Prizes


A number of awards and prizes are distributed annually to students.  

Worship Fund Prize

The Worship Fund Prize is awarded annually (February) to the student who is considered first in order of merit on entry to the Bachelor of Education degree course at Stranmillis University College.

The following prizes are usually awarded during Summer Graduation week (July) for selected final year students who have excelled during their degree course.  The awards are a prestigious symbol of recognition of superior efforts.

Andrews Loynton & McCulla Prize

The Andrews Loynton & McCulla Prize is awarded to the final year History student in Stranmillis University College who attains the highest overall standard in the final Bachelor of Education honours examination.

Association of Teachers’ and Lecturers’ Prize

The Association of Teachers’ and Lecturers’ Prize for Education Studies is awarded to the final year student who gains the highest marks in Education Studies in the final Bachelor of Education honours examination.

Centerprise International Trophy

The Centerprise International Trophy, takes the form of a cup and is awarded to the final year Geography student in Stranmillis University College who achieves the highest mark in a module, including main subject modules or a main subject dissertation, either a main subject applied educational study or a subject specific study only.

Dunn Technology Award

The Dunn Technology Award takes the form of a cup and is awarded to the final year Technology and Design student in Stranmillis University College who attains the highest mark in a module, including main subject modules or a main subject dissertation, either a main subject applied educational study or a subject specific study only.

Effenberg – Wilkinson Cup

The Effenberg-Wilkinson Cup is presented to a student of Stranmillis University College who has participated in the Erasmus or International programmes and who has exceeded all other students according to set criteria.

English Cup

The English Cup, founded by a former Head of English in the College, Dr Peter Frost, is awarded to the student who, having taken English as the main subject of the degree achieves the highest mark in a module, including main subject modules or a main subject dissertation, either a main subject applied educational study or a subject specific study only.

GTCNI Award

The GTCNI Award is a monetary prize awarded to a student teacher.  It is to be used for professional development activity(s) such as travel or further educational experiences. 

The Gail Addison Memorial Prize

The Gail Addison Memorial Prize established in memory of a former student by her family and the staff and students of the University College, is awarded to the graduating Bachelor of Education (Post Primary) student who has, in the recorded judgements of tutors and supervising teachers, shown particularly notable promise as a classroom practitioner.

Hastings Cup

The Hastings Cup is awarded to the student who achieves the highest overall classification. 

Institute of Engineering & Technology (IET) Award

The Institute of Engineering & Technology (IET) award for Technology & Design is awarded to the final year Technology & Design student who attains the highest classification score; this would include all elements that contribute towards the final degree classification as a result of their work in Years 2, 3 & 4. 

J.C. Davidson Memorial Cup

The J.C. Davidson Memorial Cup is presented to the Physical Education student to recognise the most significant contribution to the subject by a graduate.

Kathleen McSherry Prize

The Kathleen McSherry Prize is awarded to the student, either part time or full time, who gains the highest mark in a module, including main subject modules or a main subject dissertation, either a main subject applied educational study or a subject specific study only.

Maeve Ann Winters Award

The Maeve Ann Winters Award for Early Childhood Education (PGCE) takes the form of an engraved crystal bowl, specially commissioned by a former Principal, Dr Rodgers, in memory of a much loved infant granddaughter.  This trophy is awarded to the graduating student nominated by the Principal of the University College on the recommendation of the lecturer in charge of Early Childhood Education. 

Mahon Prizes

The Mahon Prizes are awarded to the man student and the woman student who, having followed a course of preparation for teaching in primary schools, have obtained the highest percentage of marks in the final examination.

Northern Bank Prize

The Northern Bank Prize for Mathematics takes the form of an engraved trophy and is awarded to the student who, having taken Mathematics as the main subject of the degree, achieves the highest mark in a module, including main subject modules or a main subject dissertation, either a main subject applied educational study or a subject specific study only.

Robert Simpson Award

The Robert Simpson Award is awarded to the final year student who is adjudged to have made the greatest contribution to the Music Department of the University College.

Science Prize

The Science Prize, anonymously donated, goes to the student who, having taken Science as the main subject of the Bachelor of Education degree, achieves the highest mark in a module, including main subject modules or a main subject dissertation, either a main subject applied educational study or a subject specific study only.

Society of Teachers in Business Education

The  Society of Teachers in Business Education Cup is awarded to the final year student who is adjudged to have made the greatest contribution to the Business Studies Department of the College.

Stranmillis University College Association Prize

The Stranmillis University College Association monetary award is presented to the graduating Bachelor of Education (Primary) student who has, in the recorded judgements of tutors and supervising teachers, shown particularly notable promise as a classroom practitioner.

Susan Curry Award

The Susan Curry Award, established anonymously in memory of a former student, is awarded to the final year Religious Studies student in Stranmillis University College who attains the highest mark in a module, including main subject modules or a main subject dissertation, either a main subject applied educational study or a subject specific study only.

TrainDirect Award

On the recommendation of the Health & Leisure Studies course team, the TrainDirect Cup and bursary is presented to the student who attains the highest percentage marks in the final year.

Vere Foster Medal

The Vere Foster Medal is awarded to the student who, having followed a course of preparation for teaching in Post Primary schools, is adjudged, on the basis of the final examination, to be the most distinguished.
