LIBRARY REGULATIONS

In these regulations the word item refers to a book, periodical, microfilm, microfiche, video, film slide, sound recording, map, and any other medium provided for the use of readers.

1. OPENING HOURS

The opening hours of the Library are displayed in the Library and on other notice boards in the College. The Library is closed on public holidays and on other days when the College is closed. Other periods of exceptional closure are at the discretion of the Librarian.

2. ACCESS TO THE COLLECTIONS

The majority of items in the Library's collections are on open access and may be freely consulted in the Library and borrowed by registered borrowers as defined in section 3 subject to the conditions set out in section 4.

The following categories of material are not normally available for loan

2.1 all periodicals, including newspapers

2.2 designated reference books, bibliographies, abstracts and indexes

2.3 microfilm and microfiche materials

2.4 maps

2.5 items in special collections*
2.6 consultation items*

*at the Librarian's discretion certain items in these collections may be borrowed overnight, at weekends and at other periods when the Library is closed.

The location of items within the different parts of the collection is at the discretion of the Librarian.

3. USE OF THE COLLECTIONS

The following are admitted as registered borrowers and may borrow from the collections such items as are available for loan.

3.1 All BEd, BA and PGCE students of the College.

3.2 All permanent teaching, administrative, library, technical and other staff of the College.

3.3 Staff seconded to the College or on short-term contracts for the duration of their attachment to the College.

3.4 Retired members of College staff as defined in 3.2 above.

3.5 Members of the Board of Governors during their period of office.

3.6 Those admitted at the discretion of the Librarian as Extern Borrowers paying an annual subscription.

3.7 Those studying in-service modules taught in the College are admitted as borrowers for the duration of each module taught in the College.

3.8 Designated members of organizations which are registered corporate members of the Library.

Others, not included in any of the categories listed above, may be permitted, at the Librarian's discretion, to consult items in the Library's collections but are not permitted to borrow.

4. BORROWING FROM THE COLLECTIONS

4.1 Registered borrowers must complete a loan transaction for each item borrowed.

4.2 No borrower may borrow an item in the name of another person.

4.3 The number of items which any borrower may have on loan at any time shall be at the discretion of the Librarian.

4.4 Items borrowed from the Library shall be returned by the date and time to which they are issued. If kept beyond this date and time a charge may be levied on each item.

4.5 Items may be renewed for a further period provided that a) any outstanding charge is paid, and b) the item is not reserved for another user.

4.6 Library staff may recall any item before the due date, and such items must be returned by the borrower on receipt of the recall notice.

4.7 Each loan shall be personal to the borrower, who is not entitled to transfer the item to another person. In all instances the borrower to whom the item was issued shall be responsible for its safe return.

4.8 Any borrower who damages, loses or who is otherwise unable to return an item may be charged the cost of replacement together with a handling charge.

4.9 A charge may be levied for each overdue notice issued.

4.10 All borrowers must return items on loan by the date at which their entitlement to borrow ends.

4.11 All items from the Consultation and Ulster collections which are available for overnight, weekend or vacation loan may be borrowed 30 minutes before Library closing time at the beginning of the loan period, and are to be returned by the time the Library is next open to readers. Such items shall be deemed to have been returned if placed in the book return bin located at the entrance to the Library. Failure to return an item on time may result in a charge being levied.

4.12 Any reader who fails to observe the regulations regarding borrowing may be suspended from use of the Library.

 

5. GENERAL REGULATIONS

5.1 No food or drink may be brought into or consumed in the Library.

5.2 Smoking is not permitted in the Library.

5.3 Quiet is to be observed in those parts of the Library set aside for study.

5.4 Large bags and sports equipment may not be brought into the Library.

5.5 The College is not responsible for the loss or damage to readers' property brought into the Library.

5.6 No mark, whether in pencil or ink, may be made on any items or property belonging to the Library. Readers found responsible for defacing any item or property belonging to the Library will be charged the cost of replacement together with a handling charge, and may, at the Librarian's discretion, be suspended from use of the Library.

5.7 No item may be removed from the Library except those items available for loan for which a loan transaction has been processed by a member of Library staff.

5.8 A member of Library staff may examine any property brought into the Library by any reader.

5.9 A member of Library staff may require any reader whose behaviour is noisy or disruptive to leave the Library.

5.10 No electrical equipment not belonging to the Library may be used without permission of a member of Library staff.

5.11 Readers may not rearrange any items of Library furniture without the permission of a member of Library staff.

5.12 an emergency evacuation of the Library readers shall follow the directions of Library staff.

5.13 A reader suffering an injury while in the Library must report it immediately to a member of Library staff.

6. INTER LIBRARY LOAN

6.1 An item is not available in the collections of the College Library may be requested from another library. If an item is loaned by another library its use will be governed by the conditions imposed by the lending library. A borrower losing or damaging such an item will be liable for the cost of replacing the item together with such other charges as the lending library may require.

6.2 If an item is supplied by another library for retention by the reader requesting the item, the College Library will levy a charge to be paid by the reader.

6.3 Extern Borrowers will be charged for each successful inter library loan application whether the item is supplied for loan or retention.
6.4 The decision to make an inter library loan request and the number of such requests which may be made on behalf of a reader shall be at the discretion of the Librarian.

 

7. PHOTOCOPYING

Items in the Library's collections may be photocopied subject to the following conditions.

7.1 All copying is subject to the provisions of the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act (1988) or the terms of the College's licence from the Copyright Licensing Agency. Readers must ensure in advance that any proposed copying is in accordance with the terms of the Act or the Licence. Summaries of both are displayed adjacent to the photocopier and further advice may be had from the Library staff.

7.2 Extreme care must be exercised in handling items being copied. Any damage must be reported at once to a member of Library staff.

7.3 Maps and items from the Library's special collections may be copied only with the permission of a member of Library staff.
