Stran: 1922-98
75th Anniversary Publication - Stran: Stranmillis College 1922-98: An Illustrated History
- by George Beale and Éamon Phoenix
History Department, Stranmillis College.
To mark the 75th anniversary of Stranmillis College, the College History Department has compiled a unique photographic memoir surveying the foundation and development of the College, the history of the site, the rich tapestry of College life over three generations and 'Stran's' signal contribution to Northern Ireland's society and culture.
- At the outset of the Ulster Plantation in 1606, the lands at Malone and Stranmillis were leased to a certain Moses Hill who built there a castle and bawn. In 1858 the present Stranmillis House was built for the Batts, a leading Belfast banking family.
- This historic estate was to be the sylvan setting for Northern Ireland's new teacher-training college in 1922. The new institution was opened in October 1922 with 198 students on its rolls.
- Over the next 75 years, Stranmillis College successfully adapted to the exigencies of war, the challenge of the major educational expansion after the 1947 Act and, in recent decades, the forging of closer links with Queen's University, St Mary's College and a range of European educational institutions.
- The photographic memoir will draw heavily on archive material, photographic and oral reminiscences and should appeal to former students, teachers and the general public alike.
