Dr Anne Heaslett Welcome To Stranmillis

Stranmillis University College has been providing a high quality learning experience for its students for the past 85 years. This is reflected in its exceptionally low drop out rate - 3.2% against a Northern Ireland average of 11.2% and high success rates. The most recent figures published by the Higher Education Statistics Agency indicate that in relation to the employment of leavers obtaining degrees from fulltime courses, Stranmillis had a 95.7% success rate.

The long tradition of student care is reinforced by the continued investment in Student and Learning Support Services. This has led to an expansion of the University College Careers Service. Students are encouraged to develop the confidence and skills required to compete in today’s challenging employment market across a full range of careers options.

This tradition of excellence owes much to the work of a committed staff. Stranmillis staff are not only highly qualified but are increasingly research active, which means that students are being exposed to critical thinking and scholarship. However, being a student at Stranmillis is not only about achieving qualifications, but also is concerned with preparation for taking on a wide range of responsibilities and future leadership roles. The ongoing expansion of the College’s international work means that students are engaging with global as well as local issues. The 2008 prospectus not only provides useful information about courses and contacts but also attempts to reflect ‘the total Stran experience’. Stranmillis is renowned for its beautiful campus, which is a designated conservation area. This is complemented by a range of buildings which reflect a mixture of old and new. The University College has embarked on an ambitious building and refurbishment programme which will help to ensure that there are high quality facilities to deliver the academic excellence which has become the Stranmillis hallmark. The new Orchard Building symbolises this commitment. It houses facilities which meet industry standards to support the curriculum areas of Art & Design, Technology & Design, Physical Education and Health & Leisure. All students will be able to benefit from the new sports hall, dance studio and fitness suite.

This publication gives a flavour of all the exciting things currently taking place but we would invite you to visit the College and see developments at first hand. Staff would be delighted to welcome you.
