Tuition Fee Payment Options (FT Undergraduate & PGCE)

Eligible students can apply for a tuition fee loan.  Students also have the option to pay their tuition fees either in whole or in part and thus reduce any potential student debt on graduating. Tuition fee rates are assessed each year. Assistance with payment of tuition fees is available by applying to your local Student Finance Authority.

Non-UK EU Students (including ROI Students), may be entitled to help with their tuition fees subject to eligibility and financial income.  Students must apply to the Student Finance Services European Team if you are an EU student. It is important that students apply for help as soon as possible. Late applicants result in students being required to pay the full fees until your assessment has been completed.

Students must ensure they contact the Finance Office either via email Studentfinance@stran.ac.uk or telephone 028 90384266 / 90384339 to make payment arrangements.

See table below for other options regarding payment.

Eligible students can apply for a tuition fee loan up to £5,500 available through the Students Loan Company for students who started their Master’s Course in 2017/18 or later by applying to Student Finance Authority. The course must last no more than three Academic Years and loans will be paid directly to the College on behalf of students. Students need to submit a loan application for each Academic Year of your course.

The Tuition Fee Loan amount available may not cover the tuition fee charged by the College. Tuition fees not covered by the Tuition Fee Loan will be invoiced directly to the student.

Students enrolling on SEN Literacy modules may be required to undertake additional compulsory assessments with additional fees, as detailed on the module choice form. These additional assessment fees will NOT be covered by a Tuition Fee Loan and therefore payment by the Student must follow the payment options detailed below.

Part-time Undergraduate Tuition Fee Payment Options

Eligible students can apply for a Part Time Tuition Fee Grant and /or Loan available through the Students Loan Company by applying to Student Finance Authority.

The amount of the Part Time Tuition Fee Grant depends on the course intensity (percentage of equivalent Full Time Course), your course fees and residual household income.

A Part Time Tuition Fee Loan will be available for any fees not covered by a Grant.

You will need to submit a fresh application for each Academic Year of your course.

The Course Intensity section of the Part Time Funding Application is to be completed by the Stranmillis College Finance Office. Ensure your Course Intensity section is scanned and emailed to studentfinance@stran.ac.uk prior to registration and enrolment for completion.  The Finance Office will forward the completed Course Intensity section only to your local Student Finance Authority on your behalf.

How much will I pay back each month?

When you begin employment and are earning over the Student Loan Company threshold for repayment, the amount you repay will be linked to your income. Once you earn over £19,390 a year (relating to 2020-21), you will repay 9% of anything over this amount. If your income is below £19,390, or drops to below that amount, you will not have to make any repayments. The time required to repay a loan is based on income and amount borrowed, not on a fixed time period as with commercial loans. For further information please visit www.gov.uk/repaying-your-student-loan.

How do I meet my cost of living expenses?

A Student Maintenance Loan and/or Grant is available to eligible students to help with day-to-day living costs whilst you are at university. The maximum amount you can get depends on a number of factors such as household income, whether you are living at home or away from home, and whether you are an independent student. Maintenance loans are added to any other student loan taken and are repayable. Grants are not repayable.

Bank Charges

Students should be aware that any bank fees levied on the University College due to cheques/Direct Debits not honoured by their bank will be passed on to the student.

Late Payment

A charge of £25 will be levied on each occasion that there is a late payment whether this is by cheque/direct debit/card (including dishonoured payments by your bank/building society/card provider). Following a failed payment, you must re-arrange payment including any late payment charges levied. It is your responsibility to ensure that there are sufficient funds in your account to cover fees due. If paying by Direct Debit we would also ask students to ensure that Direct Debits can be set up against their nominated bank account – some student accounts do not allow Direct Debit instructions.

Non-payment of Fees

Failure to pay tuition fees and/or related charges, or make appropriate arrangements to pay tuition fees, by the relevant deadline, will lead to a student being suspended. Students under suspension will not be eligible to enrol or graduate. The College reserves the right to withhold a degree certificate or transcript from any student who is in debt to the College. By withholding the degree certificate or transcript, the College will not be precluded from pursuing repayment of the debt by, for example, using a debt recovery agency, referring debts to our legal advisors and/or seeking recovery via small claims court.

It is your responsibility to make sure all fees are paid on time. Therefore, if at any time you think you may have difficulty making payments please contact the Finance Office to discuss the situation.

Course Withdrawal

It is hoped that when a student registers at Stranmillis University College they will complete their course. If for any reason a student feels that they need to withdraw they should discuss the situation first with their Advisor of Studies and/or the Student Support Officer who may be able to offer guidance and support.

If the final decision is to withdraw, either on a temporary or permanent basis, the College requires formal notification of withdrawal on the appropriate temporary/permanent withdrawal form, which you must complete and sign. This form must also be signed by your Advisor of Studies. Only on receipt of the official temporary/permanent withdrawal form can the withdrawal be actioned by the College.

Withdrawal forms are available in either the Student Support Centre or Academic Registry.

Fees

If a student withdraws from a course they will be required to pay a percentage of the fees. The amount they will be charged will depend on the date of formal withdrawal from the course, as stated on the withdrawal form. The College policy on tuition fee liability, for students commencing a degree course in Academic Year 2020/21 is as follows:

Full Time Undergraduate, PGCE and Postgraduate

Liability PointTimeframe% of Full Time Fee
Completion of Enrolment and Registration September25%
Resumption of Semester following Christmas vacation11th January 202150%
Semester following the Easter vacation19th April 2021100%

From 1 March 202175%
From 1 December 2020From 1 April 2021From 1 April 2021100%

For modules that start at times other than the start of semester 1 or the start of semester 2, similar liability dates will be identified in line with the above. Part-time undergraduate and postgraduate students may not change the modules for which they have been registered without the formal written approval of their Adviser of Studies.  Normally no such changes will be permitted after the second week of the relevant semester, except in extenuating circumstances.

This means that all such changes must take place within a two-week period at the start of the semester which is often well in advance of the module starting. Please check modules carefully in this two-week period to ensure modules are correct. An incorrect enrolment on the student’s record not identified during this two-week period will not entitle the student to a refund after the cut-off date.

Normally if a student decides to temporarily withdraw, the student will be liable for fees as detailed under the course withdrawal policy, calculated on the date of receipt of signed withdrawal form.

On return from their temporary withdrawal, if a student wishes to resume study, the student will be required to register and pay the full module rate again to finish any uncompleted modules at the prevailing module rate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. I have received an invoice for payment of fees from the College. I have received confirmation from the Student Loans Company that I am eligible for a tuition fee loan.  What should I do?

A. Please contact the Finance Office to inform us that you have received confirmation from Student Loans Company. After confirmation of your Tuition Fee Loan is received the Finance Office will make the necessary adjustment to the Student Account for payment of your Fees.

Q. I have applied for the Stranmillis University College Bursary – but I have not received confirmation of an award when I think I should have.

A. You apply for the Stranmillis University College Bursary on your funding application through Student Finance Authority. You should contact the Student Finance Authority help desk (0300 100 0077) to ensure that they have the necessary information to assess your eligibility and that they have shared your information with the University College for approval.  If successful, the Bursary will be paid on the College’s behalf by the SLC – normally in two equal instalments in January and March.

Q. My fees are overdue and I haven’t set up a Direct Debit. Can I still do this?

A. A Direct Debit may still be set up but the instalment count will be reduced according to the month set up (e.g. A monthly Direct Debit set up in late November, will miss the November payment, the number of payments will therefore be reduced and normally an alternative payment method asked for the missed instalment/s).
