1981 Football Team

Ian McArthur – a former student at Stranmillis College, graduated 1981, reflects:

“1981 was the year that King’s Scholars disbanded but that year also signalled the end of the Football team’s tenure in the Irish League B Division. The previous summer the football team were unbeaten on a nine game, three week tour of the Eastern Seaboard of North America where we played both US colleges and club teams. I was captain of the First Eleven team in 1981. The numbers of male students attending Stran was very low so it was difficult to field two teams. However, that year we were blessed with three or four full Irish League players. In the highly competitive NI Colleges League we came second (only on goal difference) to QUB which was a major achievement and beat a UUJ team filled with Irish League regulars.”

Included also in the photo are Jim Alexander (deceased) who played for Cliftonville and Portadown, Harry Greer who played for Ards and Distillery and Colin Mills formerly of Crusaders. This was a particularly strong Stranmillis team who deserve to be commemorated.
