studying at stranmillis
Our students, like our staff, are inspired to be shapers of education rather than followers.
At Stranmillis, you are taught by an exceptional team of education researchers, scholars and experienced practitioners. Almost 70% of our teaching staff are qualified to doctoral level – almost double the UK average for Education departments. This means that you will be taught and learn from established leaders in their field with a passion to inspire, question, innovate and motivate. We know that doesn’t happen in the lecture theatre alone. Your teaching and learning experience is enriched through a blended learning approach of lectures, workshops, tutorials, group and individual projects and self-directed study.
Our students, like our staff, are inspired to be shapers of education rather than followers.
At Stranmillis University College we believe that anyone who would benefit from a university education should have access to one. We support our staff and students in an inclusive community where all can enjoy their experience and achieve their study and career goals. We are a community based on dignity and respect for all irrespective of political opinion, race, sexual orientation, gender religious belief, age, disability or marital status.
Because we are a small, tight knit community of learners, our staff know you. To support you on your undergraduate journey, you are assigned a personal tutor, who will take the time to get to know you and your learning needs, give you personalised academic support and help you to stay on track with your studies. All freshers are also allocated a peer mentor, a current student on a similar degree programme who is there to support and help you settle into uni life.
Impact-driven research and scholarship are at the heart of who we are. Our work in areas such as pedagogy, educational underachievement, anti-bullying, special educational needs and early years education is internationally recognised and is positively impacting communities in Northern Ireland and globally. That research has a direct impact on you as a student. Innovative thinking, pushing boundaries and creating new and better solutions to professional practice is in our DNA. Our students, like our staff, are inspired to be shapers of education rather than followers.
Connecting globally is one of the College’s strategic priorities, one that permeates our teaching, our research and your student experience. Visiting students and staff from over 30 university partners globally, and the experiences our students enjoy from their own study abroad opportunities, add significantly to the richness and vibrancy of the student learning experience and the campus as a whole.
Our ratings in the National Student Survey place Stranmillis University College joint first amongst higher education institutions in Northern Ireland for student satisfaction; a further indicator of the high quality and excellence of the teaching and support you receive.
