Stran Halls offers affordable, hassle-free student living, with a catered accommodation package that allows you to live well within the maximum living away from home Maintenance Loan.
Stran Halls’ six halls of residence provide 411 comfortable single occupancy rooms, with a choice of shared or en-suite bathroom facilities. Rooms are fully furnished with:
- Bed, duvet and pillow
- Wardrobe plus lockable cupboard and bedside unit
- Study desk, lamp, swivel chair and shelving
- Armchair and soft furnishings
- Wash hand basin, mirror and shaving socket
- 2 electric sockets
If you and friends want Standard or En-suite rooms beside each other, we’ll arrange for you to be in the same flat.
Every flat has its own communal kitchen, equipped with fridge, freezer, combination oven (grill, oven and microwave), toaster, individual storage units and dining area.

Catering includes a cooked breakfast and 3-course evening meal (Monday to Thursday) and cooked breakfast and lunch (Friday). When working out the total cost of living away from home, there are many things that you need to make sure you budget for – the weekly/monthly cost of your accommodation and the minimum length of the contract, plus the cost of food and utilities such as electricity, heating and broadband. What accommodation is available?
Whilst both en-suite and standard rooms are available this year, early booking is advised. You can guarantee your room by reserving a place during the priority booking window (6th March 2024 – 30th April 2024).
When do I apply?
Applications are open. Contact the Halls Office by email at halls@stran.ac.uk. For an application pack, see above.
What are the costs?
Standard single room, £130; En-suite single room: £160 per week. These costs include room, catering (5 days a week), water, gas, electricity and high speed broadband.
Do I need to pay a deposit?
Yes. A £200.00 deposit is required to secure your room with your application. The deposit is fully refundable if you do not secure a university place in Northern Ireland.
How long is the contract?
Contracts are for 37 or 38 weeks, including Christmas and Easter holidays. You’ll be on a fixed-term contract.
Can I stay during the summer?
You can apply, but you may have to change room for the duration of the holiday. Accommodation will be subject to availability.
Do you have rooms for students with mobility impairments?
We have 4 purpose-built en suite rooms on the ground floor. If you want to apply for these rooms, please let us know.
Is there out of hours support?
Yes, we have dedicated 24 hour security staff available out of hours.
Are Halls only for first years?
No – students from any academic year of study can apply for accommodation in Stran Halls.
Who do I contact if I need help?
Just call at the Halls Office Reception at the Refectory Building during working hours.
What happens if I can’t pay?
We’d rather you told us if you’re having financial difficulties. Contact the Finance Department for advice.
What do I do if I break or lose something?
Accidents happen so again, just talk to us and we’ll see what we can work out. If you lose your keys, let Halls Office Reception know and we’ll organise replacements.
There will be a £30 deduction from your deposit if you can’t return all your keys.
How do I get my deposit back?
You’ll be checked out of your room with a full inspection. Providing the room’s in the condition you found it, you’ll get your deposit back within 28 working days.
