MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AIDERS
Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is the help provided to a person who is developing a mental health problem or who is in a mental health crisis.
Campus Mental Health First Aiders are trained to recognise symptoms of mental health problems, provide initial help and how to go about guiding a person towards appropriate professional help. They possess a high degree of integrity and maintain confidentiality.
Mental Health First Aiders are not therapists and can only provide initial support to guide students to professional counsellors.
PHYSICAL FIRST AIDERS
If a person appears to be extremely unwell (eg., they have breathing difficulty or have collapsed or passed out) make sure that an ambulance is called FIRST; then inform the front gate (ext 356) or security staff of where and what the emergency is so the ambulance can be directed. Then contact a campus first aider to attend to the casualty (see first aider contact details on the left).
If at all possible, stay with the casualty until the ambulance or first aider arrives. Report the incident promptly to a member of staff, giving as much detail as possible.
