Professional Learning Programme (Stackable Units)
Each unit carries 10 credits of learning and is delivered over 6 weeks, with 2 hours per week of guided professional learning.

An online learning area supports each unit, providing:
- Practical tools and templates
- Examples of SEN interventions and good practice
- Opportunities for reflection and professional dialogue

Unit 1: Introduction to SEN Categories and Inclusive Education
10 credits | 2 hours per week | Monday 7.00–9.00pm
Dates: 16 February – 23 March
This unit introduces participants to key SEN categories and contemporary inclusive education frameworks. It establishes a shared understanding of need, inclusion and professional responsibility across educational contexts.
Focus includes:
- Overview of SEN categories and profiles
- Inclusive education principles and practice
- Roles of practitioners and support staff
- Creating inclusive learning environments
Unit 2: Communication and Language Support Needs
10 credits | 2 hours per week | Monday 7.00–9.00pm
Dates: 13 April – 25 May
This unit explores speech, language and communication needs, focusing on identification, support strategies and inclusive practice across learning environments.
Focus includes:
- Communication and language development
- Identifying barriers to communication
- Classroom and support strategies
- Working with specialists and families
Unit 3: Autism Specialist Interventions and Sensory Learning
10 credits | 2 hours per week | Monday 7.00–9.00pm
Dates: 1 June – 6 July
Unit 3 provides specialist insight into autism-informed practice, with a strong emphasis on sensory processing, regulation and learning.
Focus includes:
- Autism-affirming approaches
- Sensory processing and sensory environments
- Supporting engagement, communication and independence
- Practical strategies for classroom and support settings
Unit 4: Nurture and Trauma-Informed Practices
10 credits | 2 hours per week | Monday 7.00–9.00pm
Dates: 7 September – 12 October
This unit examines nurture principles and trauma-informed practice, supporting learners’ social, emotional and behavioural wellbeing.
Focus includes:
- Attachment, trauma and adverse experiences
- Nurture-based approaches in education
- Building safe, relational learning environments
- Supporting emotional regulation and behaviour
Unit 5: Specialist SEN Practice Across Educational Phases
10 credits | 2 hours per week | Monday 7.00–9.00pm
Dates: 19 October – 30 November
This unit supports practitioners working across Primary, Post-Primary and Further Education, addressing changing needs across the learner journey.
Focus includes:
- Supporting early years and primary learners
- Meeting SEN in post-primary settings
- Supporting vulnerable young people and adults in FE
- Transition, continuity and progression
Unit 6: Observing Learners with SEN and Planning Support in Partnership
10 credits | 2 hours per week | Monday 7.00–9.00pm
Dates: 18 January 2027 – 22 February 2027
The final unit focuses on observation, assessment and collaborative planning, emphasising partnership with key stakeholders to support learner outcomes.
Focus includes:
- Observation and assessment approaches
- Planning targeted support and interventions
- Working with families, professionals and agencies
- Reviewing impact and next steps
Progression and Award
Each unit is stackable and may be taken individually as CPD. Completion of all six units enables progression to the full award: Certificate in SEN in Action for Learning Professionals
