A First at Celtic Park: The Daily Mile Aligns with GAA Ethos at Championship Clash

Celtic Park provided the stage for a landmark moment as The Daily Mile became the first school‑based health and wellbeing initiative to be showcased during a championship GAA fixture, at the recent Doire v Aontroim match.

The event reflected a powerful alignment between the ethos of the GAA and the values underpinning The Daily Mile — community, inclusion and lifelong participation in sport.

At half‑time, local schoolchildren from St Canices Dungiven, St Canices Feeney, and Long Tower PS Derry took to the pitch, bringing The Daily Mile to life through a joyful, inclusive showcase of movement. Their participation highlighted how everyday school activity can connect meaningfully with elite sporting environments, reinforcing the GAA’s commitment to nurturing health and wellbeing at every level.

The partnership was further strengthened through the inclusion of a dedicated The Daily Mile feature in the official match programme, sharing the initiative’s impact with thousands of supporters and emphasising the message that lasting healthy habits can begin with just 15 minutes of physical activity a day.

Reflecting on the significance of the occasion, Dr Brenda McKay Redmond and Dr Barbara McConnell, Co‑Chairs of The Daily Mile Network NI and Senior Lecturers at Stranmillis University, commented:

“Showcasing The Daily Mile at a championship match in Celtic Park powerfully demonstrated how education, sport and community can come together to support children’s health and wellbeing. Seeing local children on the pitch embodied both the GAA ethos and the inclusive spirit of The Daily Mile. We are sincerely grateful to Ulster GAA and everyone involved for their support in making this landmark event possible.”

With Northern Ireland leading the UK in school participation, and supported by partners including Ulster GAA, NI Athletics, Health Trusts, Education Authority and Universities the Celtic Park showcase represented more than a one‑off moment. It marked a meaningful celebration of collaboration between education and sport, reinforcing the growing impact of The Daily Mile and its potential to embed lifelong healthy habits within school communities across Northern Ireland.
