It’s a small world…..
I attended Stranmillis in the 80s – bad perms and shoulder pads galore! In response to a recent Alumni call out for memorabilia and stories I share this little gem. My aunt found these small ‘pots’ approximately 30 years ago in an antique shop and bought them for me as a gift. I asked my Great Auntie Elsie if she knew what they were for, as she attended Stranmillis in the late 1930s and she said they were salt pots for the tables in their accommodation. I felt so nostalgic about my happy days at Stranmillis and appreciate the little oasis of calm that we had the privilege to live in. My youngest son is now a student living in Stran Halls and when I brought him down in September to move in, I was delighted to get the chance to “revisit” my youth! Coincidentally, I volunteer with a charity that helps the elderly and that involves phoning some elderly people every week. I phone a lovely lady who has mild dementia and we discovered that we’d both trained at Stranmillis. We’ve bonded over our mutual history even though there’s nearly 40 years between us! She loves to chat about her time there and the great friends she made. Small world indeed! Elaine B
