Placement Experience

Placement Experience

Through partnerships with more than 700 schools and community organisations, Stranmillis provides extensive opportunities for professional and service‑learning placements. International students undertake classroom‑based experience supported by a Stranmillis faculty supervisor, who conducts placement visits and offers weekly academic and professional guidance.

Our network of over 700 school and community organisations enables extensive, high‑quality work‑based placements for students.

Overview

All of our courses are research‑informed and designed to address contemporary issues of local and global importance.

We use a range of current teaching and learning methodologies to encourage active participation and engagement. Our Virtual Learning Environment, Canvas, supports digital learning and provides comprehensive resources for each course. On‑campus classes are highly interactive, with opportunities for collaborative work, discussion and debate. Many courses also include educational and cultural visits that enrich and extend learning beyond the classroom.

Our College Library offers an excellent range of books, journals and online resources. The Library Team is always available to help you make the most of these services and to support you in finding the research materials you need.

Stranmillis is known for its warm, supportive learning community and for the strong relationships between students and staff. Our academic faculty are consistently praised for their high‑quality teaching, described by students as engaging and well‑organised.

Work‑Based Placement

Teaching placements offer valuable practicum experience in local schools, where you will contribute to the planning, preparation and delivery of lessons. You will be supported in the classroom by a supervising teacher. Placement opportunities are available across Nursery, Primary and Post‑Primary settings, and Special School placements can also be arranged for students on Special Education programmes.

For education students with limited classroom experience in their home country, or for students from other academic disciplines, it is also possible to undertake a teaching assistantship in a local school. This provides first hand experience working with children, supporting the class teacher and working with small groups of pupils to facilitate learning.
