The Postgraduate Certificate in Blended Learning is a programme offering specialised modules in Blended Learning, including digital skills and technology enhanced learning and teaching strategies. The programme is an award in its own right and students who graduate will be competent in digital literacy, design thinking skills and blended and eLearning approaches to hybrid and technology rich delivery. The course is suitable for workforce development in education, in industry, in health and in corporate sectors involved in staff development or education and training. Instructional and blended learning design skills will be supported as well as digital leadership and cyber readiness.

The aim of the programme is to help you learn to teach within the connected classroom and develop new leadership skills as an e-teaching/blended learning professional. The course will support new and career-long practitioners to develop instructional design and advanced teaching skills in the field of blended learning.

The programme is delivered online, with twilight teaching seminars bi-weekly.

How will I study?

Teaching and learning is delivered through a blended approach of online lectures, virtual learning activities, reflective, self-directed study.

Contact time

Classes are normally held once weekly (in the evening) via the College’s virtual learning environment – Canvas.

Who will be teaching me?

You will be taught, assessed and supported by an exceptional team of internationally recognised, research-led and experienced practitioners.

How will I be assessed?

There are no written examinations. Modules are assessed by coursework.

Entitlement

Students who accumulate 60 CAT points on this programme, will graduate with a Postgraduate Certificate.

Please note this course does not give you Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)

STR7011 – BLENDED LEARNING & DIGITAL LITERACY 1

COMMENCING OCTOBER 2024 (1 EVENING CLASS FROM 5PM- BI WEEKLY)

This module identifies appropriate blended learning models for school-based practice using a range of theoretical and best practice principles. Students will critically reflect on the approach to blended learning as a form of mediated learning within a professional context (education or industry). By the end of the module students should be able demonstrate new scholarship in the area of blended learning modality for teaching, learning and assessment.  The module will critically evaluate the professional learning experience of blended learning inclusive of teacher, leader and pupil voice using an evidence-based education approach.

STR7012 – BLENDED LEARNING & DIGITAL LITERACY 2

COMMENCING JANUARY 2025 ((1 EVENING CLASS FROM 5PM- BI WEEKLY)

This module critically reflects on the concept of learning communities and a community of inquiry approach to blended learning: teacher presence, social presence and cognitive presence. Students learn to evaluate the paradigm of blended learning in terms of active, participative learning and assessment and the inclusive nature of a hybrid learning model.  Students will demonstrate scholarship (new knowledge and theory) from practice in the field of ePedagogy and the importance of building and cultivating learning communities.

Programme Outcomes

Students will be able to:

  • Lead blended learning initiatives and strategies to support whole-school or whole-college developments for a quality approach to teaching and learning
  • Design new approaches to blended learning while critically evaluating the progress of good to best practice across the department or school or college
  • Critically engage in teaching skills to support the blended and technology-rich connected classroom and wider learning experience
  • Develop a wider pedagogy to support synchronous and asynchronous teaching and learning as a learning leader for school or college developments.

All modules are 30 CATs.  The Postgraduate Certificate may be taken as an award or progressed toward a full Master’s award.  Both modules amounts to one-third of the full programme.

All Modules are taught online, with full tutor support throughout.

Applicants will normally hold a relevant 2:2 Honours degree or above in a related discipline. Applicants who do not meet the requirements above may be considered on an individual basis, where there is evidence of relevant experience. Applicants may be required to attend an interview to determine their suitability for entry.
